Rory Safir joined Barnett Kirkwood Long Koche & Foster in January 2021, and he specializes in fighting for criminal defendants and protecting their Constitutional rights. Rory considers it a privilege to be a sword for clients and help them move forward in some of the most difficult and stressful moments of their lives.
Rory earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Michigan. After graduation, he attended law school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he obtained his Juris Doctor. While in law school, Rory competed in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court in Hong Kong. He also interned at the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office in Cleveland, Ohio, and at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, a war crimes tribunal in the Hague, Netherlands, where he won a mock trial before tribunal judges, and where he also received trainings in criminal defense advocacy from the Association of Defense Counsel practicing before the International Criminal Tribunal of the Former Yugoslavia. Rory additionally obtained a Master of Laws in international and European business law from Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, Spain.
Just before joining the firm, Rory was an Assistant Public Defender in the 13th Judicial Circuit of Hillsborough County where he sharpened his skills in trial advocacy. Rory represented indigent criminal defendants, as lead attorney, in all types of non-capital felonies and misdemeanors, having handled over 1,200 cases in his time there. Rory was especially known for his aggressive and comprehensive motion practice. Prior to that, Rory worked as a judicial law clerk in the Local and Supreme Courts of the Northern Territory of Australia where he observed hundreds of criminal law hearings and traveled with the judge on circuit to remote Aboriginal communities within the Australian Outback.
In his free time, Rory enjoys outdoor activities including scuba diving, surfing, bungee jumping, and hiking. He is also an avid traveler having visited over forty countries and having lived and worked for extended periods in Spain, Australia, the Netherlands, and Colombia.
